COMMUNICATING WITH YOUR PROFESSORS

The relationship between you and your instructors is a professional one. The communication between you and your instructors therefore should also be professional. It is important that you are aware of and act according to the following code of behavior when communicating to your instructor:

  • Email: Include in the subject line the course number (if any) followed by a short description of your note. Include your full name within the email. At the beginning of your email include a proper salutation (for example ``Dear Dr. Deligkaris''). Your email should be respectful and professional.
  • Phone: If you choose to leave a voice message then you need to mention your full name and course during your message.
  • Office visit: Turn off or set in silent mode your electronic devices before you come in. Knock on the door and ask permission to come in. If you knock on the door and you do not get a reply then do not open the door. Wait for a minute or so and then try again. If you do not get a reply then try at a different time. While you are discussing with your professor do not use any electronic device, including your phone.

For some more suggestions on communicating electronically please see here.

DISCUSSING RESEARCH OPPORTUNITIES

If you are planning to pursue further academic work then I strongly recommend you to become involved in a research project early. Ideally, you will start working on a project at some point during your second year as an undergraduate student and continue working on that project until you graduate. If you are interested in our computational biophysics/biochemistry research and you are thinking about possible research opportunities in this area please read about some of our projects here. If you would like to inquire about the possibility of working on a project please do not hesitate to contact me (bright talents are always wanted!). You are strongly recommended to start working on a project during your second year and you are not required to have any background on any discipline. Anything that you need to learn for your research, you will learn it along the way. You are required to be strongly motivated to pursue research, to have good work ethics, to be academically succesful, and to be responsible. Since this is interdisciplinary research, I am very interested in working with students that have a physics, chemistry, biology, or environmental sciences background. I am always happy to discuss with anyone our newest results and ongoing research projects, please do not hesitate to contact me!

REQUESTING A LETTER OF RECOMMENDATION

If you would like to ask me for a letter of recommendation, make sure I know you well enough and I have a very positive opinion about your work, learning and demonstrated responsibility. In order to write an accurate and complete letter of recommendation I need at least two weeks, essentially at least two weekends. Plan accordingly and inform me about your request at least two weeks before the letter is due. First meet me in person to ask whether I will recommend you. I will probably ask you questions to understand what it is you are applying for. If I agree to write the letter of recommendation, prepare the following information:

  • How many letters I will need to send
  • Whether I will mail hard copies, upload to a website electronically the letter, or send an email with the letter.
  • If I have to upload or send the letter via email, inform me about the accepted format of the document
  • Complete and accurate mailing addresses, website addresses, electronic mailing addresses.
  • Information about the program you are applying to. Include websites if available so that I can learn more about the program.
  • Your long-term goals after you graduate.
  • How will the particular program help you achieve your long-term goals.
  • Why should you be accepted to the program you are applying for?

Send me this information in one e-mail (note: 1 e-mail, not 2). In the letter of recommendation I will do my best to accurately assess your suitability for the program you are applying for. I will include information regarding:

  • academic ability to study/work in the program you are applying for
  • readiness for the rigors of advanced academic study or research
  • research skills
  • dedication
  • responsibility, reliability, and dependability
  • group work and social skills
  • evidence of overcoming adversity, rising to challenges, perseverance
  • oral and written communicatin skills
  • service orientation
  • capacity for improvement
  • ethical responsibility
  • my evaluation for the possibility of your success in the program you are applying for

For medical school applications I will follow their recommendations.

Letters of recommendation are very important letters and this is why I will send all letters directly to the address you provide me with. Due to the importance of these letters, I am unable to give any letter of recommendation to students.

Finally, you will have to waive your right to inspect my letter of recommendation.
